Do you know some English teachers who have various talent living in Japan? In my interview and writing activities, I met three interesting English teachers. The first person is Mr. Daniel Ruyle. He takes so many Japanese nature photographs using infrared. His pictures tell us the true Japanese beauty that we can’t realize in our daily life. He may notice it more than many Japanese people.

Daniel Ruyle grew up in the countryside of eastern Washington State where he enjoyed hiking hunting and fishing with his brothers, and actively studied nature. He never gave up a chance to overturn a rock or log to discover what interesting life might be underneath.
He studied History and science at the University of Washington.
His father was an avid amateur photographer working in both conventional and infrared film. This piqued his interest, and he began shooting digital infrared using external filters in 2007. Soon thereafter, he converted a Nikon D70 to infrared by changing the internal filter. Infrared turned out to be very captivating to him. At the same time He was expanded his overall nature photography with better equipment and improved techniques, especially shooting macro (tiny objects) and distant objects such as birds.
Mr. Ruyle is currently a university teacher and devotes his free time to creating photographic art.

About Photography

Why do you like taking photo?

Mr.Daniel Ruyle「It’s really gratifying to get nice photos, especially when shooting a new subject for the first time. For example, kingfishers. I have taken many hundreds of kingfisher photos, but when I got a really good photo for the first time , I was so exited. Now I want to take a photo of a kingfisher teaching her babies how to catch fish. 」

How did you make this beautiful photography?

Dan A normal camera captures the information contained in the wavelength of the rainbow–colors we can see. However, infrared cameras capture wavelengths we cannot see, and the effects can be very interesting, such as cotton candy like trees. The color infrared is not true color, simply the way the photographer chooses to post-process it in the computer, and it can be a very dreamlike photo.」

–You take a lot of nature photo, what is good about that?

Dan 「Nature is fascinating and beautiful on many levels. People who live in cities are often separate from nature, but humans can feel better and relax and even think more clearly by viewing nature.」

Where do you usually go to take photo?

Dan 「I love hiking around the stations of the Seibu-Chichibu Line. Nagano and Gunma are great for nature. Many of my photos were taken along the Seibu-Ikebukuro line, for example in Shakuji-Koen. I go anyplace I can, as time permits.」

About Nature

How to find little animals?

Dan 「Some people are good at that. You know I love nature, my eyes catch little insects and animals. As a child I used to turn over rocks and logs to find insects, snakes, and lizards- whatever creatures I could discover. 」

–What kind of child were you?

Dan 「Actually I was kind of shy when I was young. You were shy, but you became teacher (Laughter.) We lived in the countryside, My brothers and I often went hiking, hunting and fishing. I don’t like killing animals, but I love stalking them. You really become a part of nature when sneaking up on an animal. Now I stalk them with a camera. 」

What do you want to express in your artwork?

Dan 「I don’t think photography is the highest creative art form. A painter may need more creativity. However, every art form is more imitation than creation. Art is the imitation of God’s creation. When we see in nature God’s handiwork, we see real beauty. I hope my photos capture some of this.」

About Japan

How long have you lived in Japan?

Dan 「I have live in Japan more than 20 years. I traveled a little before coming to Japan. After staying a while, it became difficult to leave, and I like it here.」

–What is good about Japan?

Dan 「Many things…it’s very safe, people in general are very nice, the women are very pretty, food is good and I like my job. There is also variety of nature ! 」
